It is incredible that our world is moving so quickly towards a sustainable future, thanks to innovative minds and forward-thinkers who genuinely care about our planet. Does it seem like sustainability is almost a trend, but is it such a bad thing that eco-friendliness is trendy?
From clothing companies to food producers and more, every industry is finding some way to limit their environmental footprint. Now you can too by reinventing your hygiene and wellness routine. Welcome to the world of zero waste toothpaste. You can help save the planet and achieve sparkling clean teeth at the same time.
Zero Waste Toothpaste Brands You Should Know About
Now, zero waste toothpaste does come in packaging, so it is not completely zero waste. However, the packaging it is in is made from recyclable materials and less material than traditional toothpaste. The actual paste (or tablets) is made from better quality ingredients too.

This brand is strictly sold on Etsy, and they are one of the best you can find on the platform. Their product is a powder- not a paste- and is free from fluoride. For all you vegans out there, this zero waste toothpaste is good to use. You can purchase it in either a glass jar or a plastic-free compostable pouch.
Bite is turning brushing your teeth into a fun daily activity. Their zero waste toothpaste is also vegan-friendly and made with natural ingredients that freshen the breath, whiten the teeth, and protect tooth enamel. Simply bite into a toothpaste bit and put your wet toothbrush to work.
Zero Waste Toothpaste DIY Recipe
If you don’t want to buy a pre-made zero waste toothpaste from any of the brands listed above, no worries! You can actually make your own DIY toothpaste that is also eco-friendly, vegan (if you choose), and will waste absolutely no packaging.
Here’s a recipe found at Trash is for Tossers that we enjoy. It is a great base recipe that you can build off of.
- 1 ½ tablespoons of baking soda
- 3 tablespoons of coconut oil
- 25-30 drops of organic food-grade essential oil (choose your flavor; they chose peppermint)
Instructions to Make:
- Mix all the ingredients above in a glass dish (they suggest a small one for easy access).
- Adjust the amount of essential oil used if needed.
- Mix it together again if you added more essential oil.
How to Use:
- Use a spoon to scoop a tiny bit of toothpaste out of the jar and place it on your toothbrush.
- Brush your teeth like normal.
Using a DIY toothpaste is very different from commercialized kinds of toothpaste-like the ones made by Crest or Scope. It will take some getting used to, but keep in mind that you are doing yourself and the planet a favor by making your own toothpaste. Your teeth will be just as clean too!
